Water in Santorini is not safe
to drink. Most of tourists prefer bottled spring water which is
available at supermarkets and restaurants.

On Santorini you will find
electrical current at 220 volts, 50-cycle AC. Appliances of lower
voltage would require a transformer, but again it is recommended
that appliances are checked for safety and plug requirements before
use.

Internationally recognized
credit cards are accepted at many restaurants and shops throughout
Santorini.

Dangerous drugs, including
marijuana, are not permitted on Santorini. Visitors are subject to
detention, court trial and severe penalties.

With sunny, hot (but dry)
summers and mild winters, Santorini has an ideal climate for
visitors to enjoy. In most of the country, including Santorini, it
seldom rains in the summer. The rainy season is usually November to
February. Remember, the sun is fierce, so carry sunburn cream, a
wide-brimmed hat and wear clothes with sleeves you can roll down.

Supermarkets and gourmet shops
stock delicacies from around the world. Some small shops, often run
as a family concern, stay open as late at 22.00 hrs every day to
sell fruit, vegetables, confectionery, cigarettes, ice creams, cool
drinks, newspapers, etc.

Greece uses the metric system
of weights and measures. For those not familiar with the metric
system, the following conversions are offered as a guide: 25
millimeters (mm) is approximately one inch; 1 meter (m) is a little
more than a yard; 1 kilometers per hour is just over 35 miles per
hour; and 25 degrees Celsius (C) is a warm 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Greek time is GMT plus two
hours.

Modern Greek is the national
language, although English and French are spoken widely and German
is used in business circles.

Driving on Santorini and
anywhere else in Greece can be done either with vehicles owned by
tourists or rented ones. A valid driver's license from the country
of origin and international permit (obtained from the Greek
Automobile & Touring Club, known as ELPA) are a must, as are
insurance and registration. Driving is on the right.

No license is required for
fishing from the harbor so those interested in this sport can enjoy
it. However if you are spear gun fishing, keep in mind to be at
least 200m. away from any other people in the water, as provided for
by law.

You will always find a
pharmacy near you on Santorini, marked with a green cross. One is
usually open 24 hours in Fira on an alternate basis.
